My grandparents came from Ireland and Scotland and my grandfather lived in Liverpool for half his childhood. This means that both my mother and I tended to use British terms. I still think of French fries as chips and my car has a bonnet and a boot.

I spent so much time with my gran that I had a Scottish accent when I started school. It has faded. My mom had the same issue when she was young.
