American vs British English

Yes, English is the lingua Franca

It’s almost a sick joke English being a hybrid language

I don’t know

What about the United States versus America

Its the linga franca in most parts of the world.

Its a great language, but a great blend of German and Latin.

It has so many words and so many rules

And none of us can fully speak it. Some very very big words that higher classes would use, that’d leave us scratching our heads haha

Do not mention Diplo. He slept with my ex-girlfriend and I hate him

I think the amalgamation of German and Latin makes it really complicated but I don’t know the etymology or the systems in play

We use the word ordering of both, but predominantly the Latin mode. I can speak German and Spanish, and I know some Latin (liturgically speaking).

Naturally. We could, English or Spanish, communicate our needs with just nouns. Sadly thats impossible with German.

Ie: if a man in a car pulls over and says “Petrol”, you know he needs pointing towards the garage. If a man points at a menu and says “This” you know he wants what he is pointing out. Imagine a German (Lord bless us) trying to formulate what you “could” be trying to say. Does he want petrol? In his hand right now or in his car? Does he require a container? To pour on himself? To take to his car? To gift to someone? honestly.

Language is so fascinating. Sound and meaning - both have histories and impossibly great levels of depth but also spectrum of variation.

Language is the great medium

This has made me want to return to studying either Arabic or Bangla. I struggled with the scripts for the former and struggled with the sounds of the latter but it gave me an appreciation since not found elsewhere (not even the same beauty is in Physics or Music).

Bangla would be awesome!

I need to study Spanish more. I’m at an intermediate level.

I spell words in the British form because my 1st grade English teaching assistant was British. My kindergarten teacher also taught the German alphabet first.

If American cookies are called biscuits, what are what we call biscuits in America called in British English?
