I’m not going into the politics of the Lindsay Clancy story, but I do like to talk about the misconceptions the general public has against psychosis. It’s clear it was psychosis, but what I find troubling is the lack of sympathy people are having for people with psychosis, literally calling people with schizophrenia monsters.
Throughout my day to day life, I don’t see much stigma personally. I’m more stigmatized for my religion where I live than being schizophrenic. But on the broader scale, I see crevices where hatred flourishes in the topic of psychosis.
It not just hatred, but misunderstanding that complicates everything.
I honestly had no idea what this was about but looked it up on the internet. I don’t know man, considering how the murders were carried out, I can see how someone could take a dim view of this person.
Even at my worst in psychosis, I could never do something like that, especially to my own children. I mean, maybe she was confused and maybe she wasnt, but reading the story just gave me chills imagining what she did.
Anyway, I have not been following the story so I wont comment further, but this is the kind of stuff that creates fear and hatred of people like us, when most of us wouldnt hurt a fly.
Im NOT a mental health professional NOR do i know much about postpartum depression/psychosis but i never had homicidal ideation EVER and ive heard voices telling me too do bad stuff i told them to F*CK OFF and have done multiple times
I agree with @Fisherman1992 and @SzSupportAdmin . I have never been homicidal. Plus, she looked up sociopathy. I think she was aware she had no emotional connection with other people, including her own children. There’s more to this than psychosis.
I think its important to remember that not every psychosis is the same. I knew a guy, schizophrenic, who burnt his parents house to the ground. This illness, postpartum psychosis or schizophrenia alike, can make people do violent things, even homicide. I don’t know what was through her head, no one does, but I do that this illness can reverberate the inclinations we normally don’t hold.
I agree. Some of the nicest people have become psychotic and committed murder. Psychosis is not a character trait but a symptom of mental illness.
To this case. As I’m writing this I’m not aware of a verdict. I think the case hinges on premeditation and a battle of the experts. I do see premeditation: she asked her husband to go pickup some groceries and medication, and she did internet searches related to the crime. This type of case usually has a verdict in the first day of deliberations, so it seems that the jury (9 women and 3 men) put a lot of weight on the defense’s expert witness (a world-renowned expert in postpartum psychosis).
If I had to guess I think she will be found guilty of manslaughter. I think the postpartum psychosis will mitigate the most serious count, and the premeditation will take the not guilty by reason of insanity count off the table.
I’ve been wrong before, so we’ll just have to wait for the verdict.
