Poor Alfie the dog is recovering from poisoning

Alfie is my neighbours yellow Labrador I help look after him in the afternoons

Yesterday Alfie went for his regular walk with his dog walker. He came back around midday.

when I went to give him his lunch at 1pm he was in a terrible state. His walking was uncoordinated, he didn’t want food and was just awful.

It was just awful.

I phoned his mum and she left work to see him. We took him to the vet as an emergency. They saw him immediately but couldn’t tell if he had eaten something or if he was having neurological problems.

Alfie ended up going to the vet hospital. It was their opinion Alfie had acute cannabis poisoning. Neither me, his mum or his dog walker use cannabis so he must have found it on his walk. The vet said this is more common than you think.

he spent a night under observation in the hospital but thank goodness he was much better this morning. His mum brought him home at 10am and he was back eating treats and playing with his toys.

The whole experience was just horrible. In fact I held it together all yesterday but an hour ago the stress of yesterday, alongside other stuff, really hit home so I took a blood pressure med and did breathing exercises.

Things are a lot better now but it brought into stark relief how impotent you feel when your cherished pets are unwell

Better, I think. She still sounds a bit nasally when you have her close to you, but I think shes fine. She plays, eats, sleeps and goes to the bathroom fine, so I think everything else seems normal.

One of the nurses while we were at the vet said that her puppy breathed like that when she young.

Vet gave her some antibiotics just in case it was a resperatory infection.

that is scary! He must have found a discarded stash or bag and consumed it. At least it wasn’t antifreeze!

So glad he is okay

@Agent101g I was wondering if some dealer hid his stash in like the field Alfie was walking in? I mean like so if the cops came to his house they would find nothing?

Really stupid and reckless though

That’s a good guess

Poor dog. He is lucky he had you to check on him and find him like that. You did the right thing.

Hopefully he is feeling much better today.

Hey @Qwerty thank you so much for saying that.

I wasn’t sure if I was over reacting at the time but, like you say, it was the right thing to get him to the hospital

Thanks @Lilyofthevalley he is so much better than two days ago.

I did notice a 1 inch diameter bald patch on his chest.

Not sure if that was shaved by his vet doc for an ECG (ekg). Concerned that maybe Alfie is anxious and scratched it away?

isn’t an immediate problem but have told his mum we should keep an eye on it
