Inflection or tone of voice has been triggering me my whole adult life with mh issues, before being dx sz. I cannot deal with reading it as sarcasm or threatening, insulting, rejected, paranoia. I think its a part of schizophrenia for me. Does anyone else struggle with it?
Hyper-salience: Your brain flags a normal change in vocal pitch as highly significant and dangerous, forcing you to pay intense attention to it.
The above is what it is called
Does nobody understand this?
Hyper-salience (or aberrant salience) in schizophrenia is a process where the brain inappropriately assigns high importance, meaning, or urgency to neutral, ordinary, or internal stimuli. Driven by dopamine dysregulation, this phenomenon causes everyday sights, sounds, or random thoughts to feel deeply significant, laying the groundwork for delusions and hallucinations. [1, 2]
How Hyper-Salience Works
- Dopamine firing: Normally, dopamine flags things in our environment that matter for survival or goals. In schizophrenia, this system misfires and releases dopamine without an actual reward or important cue. [1, 2, 3]
- The “Aha!” feeling: Ordinary events—like a stranger glancing your way or a car passing by—suddenly carry an intense, unexplained sense of profound importance or threat. [1, 2]
- Brain networks: The brain’s salience network (including the insula and anterior cingulate cortex) struggles to properly filter what deserves attention versus what does not. [1, 2, 3]
Connection to Symptoms
- Delusions: The mind tries to make logical sense of these random bursts of intense significance. To explain why a neutral event feels so earth-shattering, the brain creates a belief system (e.g., believing one is being targeted or monitored). [1, 2]
- Hallucinations: When internal thoughts, memories, or background perceptions are hyper-salient, they can feel so loud and real that they are perceived as external voices or visions.
Holy crap. I do have this. I never knew what it was called!
Yes, i’ve had this too.
I think I do too. I am very sensitive to tone of voice, sometimes I mistake it for negative
