Your perception shapes your experience, but an independent physical world still exists outside the mind. [1, 2]

How Perception Shapes Reality

  • Subjective Filters: You experience the world through your senses, memories, and personal biases.
  • Individual Truths: Two people can see the exact same event and remember it in completely different ways.
  • Mental Projections: Famous thinkers like Gustave Flaubert argued that “there is no truth, only perception,” meaning human understanding relies entirely on perspective. Read more about this view on Unlimited Choice. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Why Objective Reality Matters

  • Shared Rules: Gravity, time, and physical laws affect everyone the same way, regardless of individual belief.
  • Independent Existence: A tree falling in a forest makes a sound waves through the air even if no one is there to hear it.
  • Practical Limits: Treating life as only perception can ignore physical facts, danger, and the concrete needs of the body

A.J. Ayer’s emotivism is a meta-ethical theory stating that moral judgments are not factual statements, but mere expressions of personal emotions and attitudes. [1, 2]

Core Principles

  • Non-cognitivism: Moral statements do not express knowledge or beliefs that can be evaluated as true or false. [1]
  • Logical Positivism: Rooted in the verification principle, Ayer argued that a statement is meaningful only if it is tautological (analytic) or empirically verifiable. Moral statements are neither, making them factually meaningless. [1, 2, 3]
  • The “Boo-Hurrah” Theory: Saying “Stealing is wrong” does not state an objective fact. It functions like an emotional outburst, equivalent to saying “Stealing—boo!” Likewise, praising something as good is like cheering “Hurrah!” [1, 2]

Function of Moral Language

  • Expressing, Not Reporting: Ayer emphasized that moral words do not describe a psychological state (unlike subjectivism). They simply vent or manifest feelings of approval or disapproval. [1, 2, 3]
  • Arousing Action: Ethical terms are used to persuade others and influence behavior through emotional contagion rather than logical argument

Evening all. Feeling Guilty as Sin. Dumpling (My Daughter) wants to go on a trip to Canada with her Autistic Society Group. Im looking at 5 grand, and i simply aint got it - all my moneys now locked away until im 60.

I begged the sister - but she said that she cant expect everything all of the time. The sister has the final word, shes got Power of Attorney.

Gutted. Im contemplating a loan - the credit score is good. I dunno, i feel like i have let down my little girl. I simply dont have the cash to throw around anymore, im living in the flat i used to rent, and i simply cant lose thousands of interest if i withdraw the money. Its all high interest, on the agreement i dont touch it for 15 years.

Bless her. Im trying my best. But at the moment Daddy is skint.

You Just Don’t Understand: Women and Men in Conversation by sociolinguist Deborah Tannen explains that men and women miscommunicate because they grow up using different conversational styles. [1, 2, 3]

Core Premise: Cross-Cultural Communication

Tannen treats conversations between men and women as a form of cross-cultural communication. Because boys and girls learn different rules for interacting during childhood, they develop distinct linguistic habits, or “genderlects”. These different habits lead to regular misunderstandings even when both people mean well. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Key Conversational Contrasts

The book outlines several major differences in how men and women approach daily dialogue: [1]

  • Rapport vs. Report: Women use “rapport-talk” to build intimacy, connection, and social alignment. Men use “report-talk” to exchange information, assert competence, and solve problems. [1, 2]
  • Support vs. Status: Women view talk as a way to gain support and consensus. Men view conversation as a status contest to keep the upper hand and avoid appearing one-down. [1, 2]
  • Understanding vs. Advice: When hearing a complaint, women look for emotional sympathy and shared feelings. Men treat the complaint as a puzzle and immediately offer a practical solution. [1]
  • Intimacy vs. Independence: Women prioritize closeness and shared lives. Men prioritize personal independence and resist being told what to do. [1]
  • Proposals vs. Orders: Women often phrase requests as cooperative proposals (“Let’s do this”). Men prefer to avoid direct commands or resist feeling controlled. [1]
  • Compromise vs. Conflict: Women tend to smooth over differences to maintain consensus. Men are more comfortable with open confrontation and debate. [1]

Impact and Takeaway

Tannen suggests that recognizing these different conversational styles helps people stop blaming each other for perceived selfishness or hostility. Understanding that a partner or coworker is simply using a different linguistic framework makes it easier to bridge the communication gap
