Surge in serotonin points to new treatment target for schizophrenia

Our study, which provides the first evidence that serotonin release is associated with the severity of negative symptoms, is an important step forward in this field. If we can successfully regulate serotonin, then it’s possible we might be able to successfully treat negative symptoms.

“This is only the first step, however, and we need to conduct follow-up studies to test this.”

I don’t really understand it? I’m on antidepressive (Venlafaxine) for my negative symptoms that increasse serotonin but according to the paper SZ negative symptoms is due to a increase in serotonin?

It says “serotonin in the frontal cortex” though. That might be different.

If I understand correctly, existing anti-psychotics are good in controlling positive symptoms only. I hope in future, medicine can treat negative symptoms also in people living with schizophrenia. Thanks for the link to the good news.
