Yes, there is evidence that memantine may help with cognitive problems associated with schizophrenia, but the effect is inconclusive, and the drug is used only as an addition to standard antipsychotic therapy.
What the studies show

Positive results:
Meta-analyses (combining several studies) show that memantine at a dose of 20 mg/day for 6-12 weeks improves cognitive function (memory, attention, executive function) and reduces negative symptoms of schizophrenia. The effect is often described as significant.
Some double-blind studies confirm improvements in cognitive tests and negative symptoms when added to risperidone or other antipsychotics.

Negative or neutral results:
Several studies (including a large 2009 study) have found no significant improvement in cognitive function or general psychopathology in patients with chronic schizophrenia. The effect may depend on the stage of the disease, the duration of therapy, and specific cognitive domains.

Important Details

Memantine is not a standard treatment for cognitive impairment in schizophrenia (unlike in Alzheimer’s disease).
It works best as an adjunct to antipsychotics rather than as monotherapy.
A positive effect is more often observed on negative symptoms (apathy, emotional flattening, decreased motivation) and cognitive function than on positive symptoms (delusions, hallucinations).

Conclusion: Memantine is sometimes prescribed off-label for cognitive impairment and negative symptoms of schizophrenia, and in some patients, it produces a significant effect. However, research results are conflicting, so the decision to prescribe it should be made only by the treating psychiatrist after assessing the specific situation.
