Herbivores (Arguably) don't exist

No apparently the pigs are okay because they don’t just eat grain. Bison and cattle took a hit.

I was brought up veggie, but we still eat potatoes when we shouldn’t.. I don’t follow the religion and my family don’t to a t. its impossible not to harm something while we eat. vegans or vegetarian…

i commend you for it… ive tried many times to be vegan and just end up feeling like ass… idk why i think i have low iron or something. I get tinnitus after a few days. it may be vitamin B deficiency.

Its a very difficult path when you arent raised that way. I too have tried it. Primarily when I was psychotic and was following a certain doctrine.

There’s a bunch of philosophical questions about it.

If we didn’t breed theses animals would they still exist and have a life at least?

Would they die in the wild worse deaths than farmed?

I think eating meat is okay but we shouldn’t abuse the animals like they do in big factory farms. The animals should have a good life.

oh man, not to derail the thread or make this overly philosophical but those chicken farms are horrendous… many of then don’t even see the light of day and are crammed in cages with their own feces.

Yeah it’s awful. And the male chicks getting culled in a giant Saw-esque grinder.

philosophically, i dont get people who would rather eat 100 grasshoppers made into grasshopper protein powder, but feel sorry for one cow… i think eating insects is kinda messed up for that reason even if it is better for the environment… i think its better to sacrifice the life of one cow than to kill 100,000 insects to get that amount of protein… its more suffering.

edit: then again cows probably eat about 100,000 bugs in their life times so it probably ends up being about the same lol

I am vegetarian because I was brought up I’m not sure I would have the willpower if I wasn’t.

Besides the religious aspect, for many, alot of it has to do with it being cute mammals, I think. Also maybe relative intelligence. Although, I dont think cows are necessarily the brightest bulbs in the lamp.

It’s like the endangered species stuff too. Everybody gets all worked up if a certain kind of rabbit(or whatever cute mammal), is going extinct. BUt if the south african red toed lizard(made that up) is being rounded up , eaten and going extinct, fewer people care.

I hear they taste like chicken.

If we were not omnivores we would never had made friendship with cats and dogs.

They used to eat our leftovers

If there was no meat industry, what would our pets eat? Tofu?

I’m vegetarian but on occasion I steal a bite of my husband’s chicken lol. I tried to be vegan but it’s hard to be 100% vegan. I try to not eat meat because I don’t like that animals have to die for me but occasionally I eat a little dairy and I like free range eggs. I do think of the animals suffering in factory farms but it’s hard to entirely give up in animal products. I just try to reduce them though.

Personally my puppy eats sticks, plastic, my printer stand, ocassionally chews on the base of the walls, once in a while gets a chunk out of my hands and arms, etc etc.

Excellent post imo. I agree with the basic idea of the post. Herbavore is a false or shaky categorization in absolutist or purely skeptical terms. However, the general nature of tending towards being dominantly herbivorous accounts for some significant biological and ecological differences. To wit: animals that generally eat only meat usually exist at a higher trophic level in smaller numbers than animals that generally eat only plants that can exist in much higher numbers. Biological and behavioral differences also exist.

The post basically argues that a human morality that makes naturalistic arguments, a naturalistic fallacy, by saying veganism is moral because herbavores are more moral than predatory carnivores or something also appeals to an absolutism that this post denies exists. It is a cool work of skepticism and critical thinking that rejects moral dogma for a moderate acceptance of amorality imo.

You simply decide if you gonna milk the cow,and then eat a cow,use pig insulin and other similar things for health, and eat it,same chicken and eggs…

It’s up to you… I mean if you want eat it..

thanks man, also not exactly sure the the scientific reasoning behind the categorizations. Its probably just to classify animals on what they MOSTLY eat. This wasnt really meant to be a scientific criticism per se, im hardly knowledgeable enough in science to do that. Was just an interesting insight for myself… i used to think like well most animals can be vegan… i know were different but surely humans can too… but it seems most animals if you look at it strictly do seem to be technically omnivores. Perhaps a continuum is more fitting than black and white categories. I can understand that cows tend to eat a ton more grass than they do bugs etc but yea…
