I have a question regarding the forum rules

I simply wanted to ask if it’s allowed to discuss the ketogenic diet in this forum.
My account was deleted from the other forum without any warning that discussion was prohibited, so I wanted to ask you to clarify whether or not it’s permitted to talk about the ketogenic diet. Thank you.

I think you can but not as cure or standalone treatment for sz

Are you on it?

@Schizbro has it right. We dont want anyone trying to convince anyone to get off medication to try the keto diet alone. We also would like to not have people convinced to reduce thier medication without consulting their pdoc first.

This theory has not been around long enough and has not been tested enough to be a convincing “cure” for schizophrenia. There are also some questions about how it may affect health when adopted long term.

I do not want to see people convinced to go off medication and then end up psychotic.

So, yes, you can discuss it, within those boundaries.

If it was really a standalone cure, I wouldve thought that there would be waves of schizophrenics saying how the keto diet cured thier schizophrenia by now.

That, exactly. Eating more protein/fat has no baring on psychotic illness. Ive been quite alarmed to see many going off their meds lately, thinking that this diet will cure them.

I was told the ketogenic diet would do permanent damage to my heart

Also why would we as a society just suddenly found that “cure” it would of been well known centuries ago

I think its a scam

My cardiologist has warned me off of future keto attempts because of heart. Family doctor warned me away from it because of having alcoholic liver damage in the past. Absolutely NOT a diet you try without talking to a doctor first.

Agreed. Its a shame we have a government official here saying its a cure for schizophrenia. God knows how much damage that is going to cause in the community and to peoples health who try it on their own. I cant get into politics but the same official has said HIV does not cause aids and has said some questionable things about the Covid Vaccine. So I do not take his endorsement of Keto as an “end all discussion” comment. You have to consider that officials credibility on medical issues.

Edit: Recommending to discuss the option with your doctor is fine. Some big announcement as a cure seems awfully premature.

Like here is the thing!

The gains I’ve had from keto/lo carb have been amazing. Like 20 years of same meds. Same doses……but……

Shrink got me onto it and it’s great for losing weight if you exercise. That is a no brainer but the subtle things are amazing…..It works and like here’s my take on it…..

First 6 months I went keto. After that I had cheat days where I had carbs but kept it still lo carb. I now am still improving and doing gangbusters. Things I never did over 20 years of treatment I’m down to lowest clinical doses of my psych meds and that happened pretty quickly after 6 months…..

I’m human and I like food but I’ve maintained my weight for 2 years following lo carb but having the odd cheat day…….and the improvements are those subtle things like negatives. Better thought processes. Better motivation. Better function which is the key………

So 20 years of same old same old but keto has been crazy amazing for me. Had a little hiccup with psiriorsis which was probably from a supplement but I’m back into it and doing crazyily good things…….It’s dumb but it works and it’s not placebo…….there really is something to it I’ve found!

I’m glad it’s working for you!
From what I’ve read, it’s a bit more difficult for someone with psychosis to stick to a low-carb ketogenic diet, since antipsychotics can increase carbohydrate cravings and alter taste.

The important thing is always to do everything under medical supervision.

After treading water for years just existing it’s done amazing things for me. I’m still sz and on meds but there really is something worthwhile to it and I would suggest that psychotic people aren’t the ones who are going to benefit from it. That is meds realms but on the way out the keto thing is something that can be game changing…..

And yes. My shrink got me and another of his patients onto it and we are both going very well……and the weight loss for long term antipsychotic users is pretty cool too…..but the mental gains for those who’ve stabilised are amazing which i think drives people to be over the top about it all.

I gained weight on keto and my cholesterol is now sky high. I may be switching to more of a paleo/Mediterranean type diet soon because after all these years I just haven’t found the diet to work for me.

I have tried ketogenic diet in the past and after some time on it came to the conclusion it is unsustainable. Maybe if one would strictly follow it to the letter it would work down the line, it just is expensive, bothersome and long-term health effects are unclear.

If i had a private chef adhering to the strict rules of a ketogenic diet who carefully weighed out my macronutirents and portions I’d keto properly, but I am not a professional footballer who can afford a private chef.

And I am way too lazy to cook varied and interesting ketogenic meals every day forever….

It’s like any other diet. It’s restrictive and it’s repetitive. It’s been like going vegan for me. It’s different but you can do it and with something like carb manager on your phone it’s not a bad thing keeping on your macros……You learn about all food but….

You have to do it for a bit and the results for me have been game changing…..but it’s a slow burn….it’s a journey over time even though weight loss is pretty much first 6 months.

I don’t do strict keto but find I fall into it quickly as the body has adjusted and I just stick to more fats than carbs and protein combined. It’s worked for me and it’s the mental gains that are the interesting thing……Yeah not for everyone but after 20 years of the same I’m making progress and function is the key as the great Ian Mackaye once said……

You don’t have to do it religeously but doing it has made a huge difference in my life and I’m probably what you’d say is high functioning……but I have sz so it sux anyways.

Just my perspective after over 2 years of living large but following lo carb principles but still enjoying food. It’s not hard. It just takes some discipline like any other diet.
