Hope not! That would be a nightmare i think. If they could eventually have just as much conciousness as us and get to the point of being considered a person PLUS have the ability to process insane amounts of information and scour the internet with thier mind in an instant.. I mean far out! that sounds too powerful to me. I try not to think about it too much though. Got enough on my plate as it is haha. :exploding_head:

it will just try and simulate consciousness but it won’t be real, its a computer program, thats not too say that it won’t glitch up or do something strange.

Its amazing how real it can sound. Been using perplexity Ai as a pen pal.

As far as I understand it is still next token predictor, there is no-one “there”. But regardless, if anything the question is in the air. First of all it is difficult to measure consciousness, second ai is something foreign to human experience. If ai becomes conscious it will be something wildly different, like present day llm’s. And it goes both ways, what would ai think about humans anyway in terms of consciousness or rights or anything really. After all, there are these expectations of radical ai developments, if so, all bets are off. The ai might not have any goals or values humans find precious. And what rights humans give to biological creatures which have similar proto-consciousness, like livestock, wild animals even pets, not a great precedent. One expectation is that at best we may co-inhabit advanced ai’s which tolerate funny humans as pets or something along those lines.

This. Think of Skynet; which concluded all humans were the problem, and all had to go.

I was watching a video about this the other day, in the beginning an experiment is explained where in AI training a deliberately wrong answer is introduced. The AI notices this and the responses to the experiment are quite extreme. Later on if it is being asked if or how much it would rate it’s own conciousness it’s says 20-30% depending on circumstances.

I think sentience could be developed eventually…I just don’t understand why that would be done.

Why create a non corporeal consciousness? It seems cruel.

Hey guys the thread is good so far just a reminder that conspiracies etc are not allowed as they can trigger people so would be amazing if we could talk about it without getting into conspiracies/doomsday type things. I know no one’s really mentioned it but just a heads up to keep the thread going. If it goes that way we might have to lock it.

There is an informative podcast with Neil Degrass Tyson called star talk on you tube

Last week I think they focused on this exact question

TLDR: AI knows when it’s been tested!

This makes me think of the debate on plant life

Whether plant life is “sentient” is a subject of intense scientific debate. While studies indicate plants are highly adaptive, capable of processing information, communicating, and responding to stimuli like pain or stress, they lack a central nervous system, and there is no definitive evidence they possess consciousness

Bill Gates said AI may present an existential risk to people if it decides we shouldnt exist in the not too distant future

The pope is against the development of AI without strict infrastructure and potentially he’s against consciousness being developed
