Maybe date someone who someone you trust introduces you to.(can be difficult if one doesnt trust anyone or have any friends n social network etc )
If you go to a private match making site they do police and identity checks on the people before they accept them to their matchmaking services.
Costs a bit but maybe something like that would ease your mind.
