It’s not much but I’ll take it

My company has a luncheon for us every three months. They’ll have some good food and we sit around and socialize. I kind of dread them, they usually go good but it’s often awkward and today was the day of a luncheon. Hardly anyone was talking and nobody was talking to me.

Then the boss was ribbing me about working overtime because I guess everybody knows I’m not thrilled with working, I work minimum hours. I guess the boss felt sorry for me so he said loudly so everybody could hear, “Yeah, Nick did a good job on the chrome” because I polished bathroom fixtures all morning. And this girl chimed and said, “Yeah, they look great” and a couple other people complimented me.

I think they just don’t know what to say to me because I don’t join in the teasing and put downs they all engage in so they went out of their way to be nice. Hell, I’ll take it, a compliment is a compliment.

I dread those work get togethers as well. Last time we had to go around the table and speak up a story to a coworker who was leaving. I managed to wing it that time, but it’s just hard to come up with something sensible to say while on the AP. It’s like cryptonite for the brain.
