My dog is afraid of her new food and water bowls

Dogs are so weird. Our puppy is getting bigger so we got her some larger food and water dishes.

She had this tiny dual water/food dish from when she was six weeks. She is nine weeks now and we decided she needed something bigger to hold bigger portions of food as she gets older.

Well, this morning was her first feeding out of them. Normally when I fill the bowl with food she rushes over to gulp it down quickly. Today, at first she wouldnt go near them. After some urging, she finally did but would grab a few pieces out and then retreat away from the bowl.

It was kind of cute, but a little silly.

She acts so tough with us…sometimes even a bit defiantly tough, which we are trying to correct(mostly with my wife)…but when she sees a new bowl, or hears a lawn mower or a motorcyle or a big dog bark she retreats like a coward  .

Typical puppy silliness lol! She’ll get used to the bowls. Are you putting her in dog training? No judgment either way, just curious.

No, we will train her ourselves. She will eventually get there. Skye listens to me for the most part. Now if I can just get her to listen to my wife better we will be in good shape  .

Lol! Is your wife emotional? I notice dogs think they need to be in charge when emotions get in the way. But it could just be getting her used to listening to both of you. I trained my dogs except the Irish wolfhound. For her we got a trainer to come to the house. He was too aggressive with her in my opinion so after the initial training we didn’t use him anymore. She’s a good dog though. Now I have to get my little Tibetan spaniel to get used to strangers in the house even though we rarely have people here. She barks at people like crazy.

Yeah puppies get frightened by new objects and experiences

This is normal puppy behavior

It will take some time

I think part of it has to do with just the authority in my voice and the way I express myself, but yes, my wife can take things too personally with the puppy IMO.

Early on she was taking hard bites and chews as a sign that the puppy didnt like her, when its just what puppies do and something that they need to be broken of over time.

IMO, its not that the puppy likes her any less than me…its just that she doesn’t present herself with the authority that I do. This is partially her technique but also probably just the natural deepness of my voice.

Our puppy has probably spent the last 4 weeks before we got her of her life fighting and playing with other puppies. She even has a scar above her left eye from this.

did you change the location of the bowls? are they where the smaller bowls were?

THey are in the same spot @jukebox . She seems to have mostly gotten over it at the noon feeding time, though.

She sounds a bit autistic

Fear of loud noises, change in routines.

Yeah, the biting etc is totally normal for puppies. You’re right. She just needs to be trained. Hopefully your wife learns to understand that. And yeah, I’m sure your authoritative voice helps a lot
