Pms - and trust levels

Ability to use pms has been raised to trust level 2 and above.

This may or may not be permanent depending on if all staff agree or there objections.

The purpose of this to prevent any potential trolls , with the influx of new users, from having access to pms and harassing members.

Also, this way anyone that may be suspicious can still be here without the risk of pm harrassment.

As I said, this may or may not be a permanent measure.

If it stops a lot of issues before they start and save you guys time I am all for it

I am part of another forum that makes it difficult to get access to anything other than an introductory sub forum

I didn’t know that was a thing, its never happened to me, like I thought you can block people anyway idk, I guess the extra precaution could be good but if someone wanted to message someone and was genuine then I think thats not very fair, idk just thinking out loud. will you be saying to people they can’t pm because they are not at trust level 2 yet or maybe an automatic message, idk, I’m 50/50 on it but it not my call.

This idea for controlling pms originally came from @POET . So he deserves the credit. but since locking at trust level 0 is not practicle( you cant post much), I decided to raise the ability to use pms to level 2. That way new users and users that are suspect can be locked at one…still have significant ability to post, but not be able to pm where their posts are not viewable by mods.

I dont see how it isnt fair. All members will be required to reach this level to pm so it will be universal. It might only be ‘unfair’ to those members who are locked out of this level for behaving innappropriate in some way, suspicious IP stuff, etc.

The alternative of locking users at trust level 0 to keep pms oout of reach is much more unfair because trust level zero has very limited posts. Thats why I raised the requirements. So new or users we are wary of can still post significantly but cant send pms until we are sure everything is kosher.

So this is the best compromise between security and leaving new and unknown members some breathing room.

I think it’s a very good idea. It seems kind of improbable that a new member would start pm people before they really get to know them. The potential for abuse of pm as a new member is a much more real issue.

its just if someone who was new read a post and wanted to pm the person about something regarding that instead of the public forum but couldn’t bc they were not at the trust level. thats basically my point. seems most people like the idea though..
