The selfie thread and storage space

We have quite a long time before storage space will become cramped.

I also now have permanent delete to remove files from the forum as needed.

However, this function is tedious as you have to select posts, soft delete, wait 5 minutes and then perm delete each post one at a time.

With this in mind, staff has discussed it and decided that we will be limiting selfies to one per day per user.

This way, I will have to clean up the selfie threads after they close less often.

We are in no danger of not having enough storage space anytime soon, but I feel it is better to clean things up as we go rather than wait until the last minute and have to rush to clean things up when and if we do hit that point.

Thank you

Can you call the support team about that, as you’re supposed to be able to delete an entire thread in one go.

Yeah, but I thought you said that for a hosted site they might have to reboot the forum to enable that function? Didnt i read something like that?

All I know is I asked for permanent delete and this is what i got.

I’ve no idea. But I’d definitely follow it up with them. This isn’t permanent delete as we expected.

Explain to them you want to permanently delete an entire thread in one go.

This is the kind of problem they’re paid to solve.

Notice here when the refer to permanent delete , they always say “posts” not “topics” can be deleted.

We have 2 “wrenches” in topics. One wrench applies to the topic and then there are individual wrenches on posts. There is no perm delete option on the topics wrench menu. Only for individual posts.

So, I can select all posts from the topic menu and soft delete them, but there is no perm delete in the options there….only in the individual post options.

After I get done with work for the week I will contact support and ask them if there is anyway to perm delete a topic all at once, however.

As it says here…..the perm delete appears in the post menu and the first posts(which they call the topic),…however, when you try to perm delete the first post it give you an error about the topic containing posts that you have to delete first. You cannot delete the topic post until you delete all the individual posts contained in that topic.

But It’s not supposed to do that. That’s the issue. That’s what you need to talk to them about. It could be a bug.

I will talk to them but I dont believe there is a function to delete the whole topic at once. Yes, you can delete the topic through the post menu..but you first have to clean out that topic of posts. This is what they mean by deleting a topic. There is no perm delete on the far right wrench menu. It is only contained in the posts(including the first post, which is the initial topic).

I’ve just asked Copilot and it seems to be changing it’s mind. It seems to be saying that yes, you need to delete all posts first.

Still, it might be worthwhile talking to support. Maybe put in a feature request for actual topic deletion.

So, just a reminder that these guys offer 150GB for about $100/ month. They’ll migrate our existing forum too.

Szadmin said they were using about 170GB on the old forum after a decade.

I just calculated based on current server space consumption. If we were to stay at the current rate without making any perm deletions, we should have about 500 days before we were to max out. So we have some time to think about our options.

We may get a little more posting once the old forum is completely gone, but we have some time.

I just dont want to exhaust members (or myself) moving all over the place right away.

As I said before though, we can look into more thoroughly after the holidays.

We are good here for now.

Im just trying to stay ahead of things as far as space goes.

So, dumb this down for me, should I not post a selfie then because a shortage on storage?

Lol.

Or is it okay as long as I delete it afterwards?
