Yes, plateaus are still very common for someone taking Contrave plus Metformin.

Neither medication continuously drives weight loss month after month. Most people see:

  • More weight loss in the first few months.

  • A gradual slowing of the rate of loss.

  • Periods where weight stays flat for several weeks.

  • Occasional cycles of loss, plateau, then loss again.

Clinical studies of Contrave show that average weight loss tends to level off after about 6–12 months, and many people experience multiple plateaus along the way. Metformin can contribute to modest weight loss, but it’s generally not a powerful weight-loss medication by itself.

A plateau doesn’t necessarily mean the medications have stopped working. It can happen because:

  • The person now weighs less and needs fewer calories.

  • The body adapts to the calorie deficit.

  • Water retention masks fat loss.

  • Eating habits gradually drift upward over time.

If someone has been at the same weight for more than about 6–8 weeks despite consistent eating and activity habits, that’s usually considered a meaningful plateau and may be worth discussing with their healthcare provider.

How much weight has this person lost, and how long have they been stuck? That gives more context for whether the plateau is typical or unusually long.
