¿What if Dr. Hoffer was telling the truth about vitamins for schizophrenia?

I saw a documentary where he and other orthomolecular doctors are interviewed; it’s called “Feed Your Head.” He talks about high doses of niacin for schizophrenia.
I found a document online where he explains that he gave his schizophrenia patients between 3 and 27 grams of B3. Practically unaffordable for the average person. Its very expensive.

But I was surprised to read that he not only gave his patients vitamin B3, but also vitamin C (between 1 and 3 grams), thiamine (B1), and in some cases, vitamin B6.

¿Has any of you ever consulted with an orthomolecular doctor?

No, he’s a nut and his protocol is dangerous. The American Psychiatric Assocation (APA) tried to reproduce his results in the 1970s in large studies with a lot of resources poured into them. No success AT ALL. Subsequent research over the years has discovered how dangerous and toxic many of the dosing levels he recommended are.

He’s a verified quack. His treatment is dangerous and will hurt you in the long term. Let him fade into obscurity where he belongs.

Edit: Forgot to mention that the APA task force also found his research methodolgy was “fundamentally flawed” - polite way of saying his research was complete shite.

It’s an alternative treatment, not a main treatment for schizophrenia. If it worked well, for the majority of patients, it would have become a main treatment. Just a blurb from ChatGPT about orthomolecular treatment for schizophrenia:

Risks of orthomolecular-only treatment

  • Delayed or absent antipsychotic treatment

  • Higher relapse rates

  • Increased hospitalization

  • Permanent functional decline

Apparently mainstream medicine doesn’t accept the orthomolecular field.

Seriously. They’ve studied the vitamin theory to daath. From what I’ve found diet and exercise are far more interesting. Look to use lo carb and adding the fermented foods to diet for something like addiction stuff is promising……There is no benefit to vitamin therapy and it’s been done….move to these things I’ve said. You might be suprised!

No he’s an idiot and scammer and wasted years of my life and misleads people to make money. Sz is not cured by vitamins 90% of us have already tried this. If it were that simple all of us would have been cured by now. Simple fact is it doesn’t work. Go buy some niacin and try it yourself lol

Vitamin b6 in chronic high doses can sometimes be dangerous. For the nerves.

Hello Sir,

Is that really you?

I’m so sorry, I don’t wish to spook you…

I was a chronic lurker on the old forum, and have only really ‘come out’ (as SMI) on this forum.

Back then, I was just too ashamed (but also paranoid) to post anything. (I may have swung too far in the other direction here - my apologies anyone who is reading this.)

Anyway, if it’s really you @rogueone , welcome here!

I believed that crap. I came off my meds and went on mega doses of niacin.

I ended up psychotic in the hospital.
