We should rename it Prince because no matter what we call it in everybody’s mind it will still be the illness formerly known as schizophrenia.

The name ‘spastic’ was changed to ‘cerebral palsy’.

‘Spastic’ had sadly become a derogotary term.

Changing the name did seem to change people’s perceptions, if only a bit, and over time.

And it made people more aware of what the condition actually is i.e. it helped educate people about the condition.

Perhaps the same could be done for schizophrenia?

Well Schizophrenia is a perfect term for our condition, really. What needs changing is our perception and others. We are not “schizophrenics” we are “people with schizophrenia”.

Same with my son. He has a diagnosis of autism, but I wont call him autistic. He is more than his diagnosis. So are we.

I call myself autistic. Don’t care about the label. It’s how you wear the label. I still think it would be nicer to be addressed as Your Highness or Your Majesty, however.

Edit: I admit to being mildly fussed over losing the Asperger’s label, which I preferred. Most people don’t automatically conflate it with cognitive challenges, causing unnecessary explanations.

A spade is a spade.

Depends. Its overly diagnosed so people either roll their eyes or act OTT. Admittedly, my son is what was “Aspergers”. That I don’t mind, but it’d still be “My son who has Aspergers”. People now are too quick to demote and make an illness a central part of one’s personal being. Individuality can be lost very quickly, in a world that likes clear cut labels and tribes. Sadly. Thats why Im still slow to come out (haha) as having Schizophrenia as it blows who I am away and people just focus to see the illness. Yes its a part of me, but Im still me.

“You have trouble making eye contact?”

”I’m autistic. I also don’t find you interesting.”

Yes, I’m an arse.

I always preferred manic depression

I once heard a joke about manic depression/bipolar disorder.

Not sure if now or here is the time or place to share it?

Sorry if it’s not and I’m being insensitive.

Probably not a good idea, just in case.

Fair enough.

Sorry

No need to apologise, you didn’t share it!
