Body positivity and body neutrality

Are people here aware of the concepts of body positivity and body neutrality? Body positivity is the idea that we are all beautiful and that we should celebrate our bodies regardless of their form, health or status in our media culture. Personally, I’m more of a body neutralist. I believe we shouldn’t even discuss the body and let our thoughts be private on the subject. I sort of follow Shonda Rhimes’ perspective.

What do you guys think? Are you a body? Positivist a body neutralist or are you neither?

I wear a body. I’m not the body just as I’m not this shirt

You sound sort of like a neutralist

I’m more into Alan watts’s perspective on the body which is that Western perspectives lead us to claim that we have a body. As if we are something separate from the body that owns the body itself. He looks at the actual syntax and criticizes it. There are different linguistic approaches to describing one’s embodiment in other languages. And he sees them as more healthy. Because from his perspective the body is not something that we have or own or occupy, but instead in fact our embodiment is our being.

Prolly more body neutral but only as an ideal…in reality gotta talk bout dat body sometimes

I’ve learned that if you adhere to the rule to never refer to someone’s body or your own, you can change the way you think about things

Yes, but why discipline the self against cultural expectations … to protect feelings of others or something else?

For the sake of propriety

Yes. Telling someone who is morbidly obese that their body is healthy and beautiful is stupid, dishonest, and harmful to their health. You’re not a bad person if your weight gets away from you, but you’re not healthy and it’s not beautiful.

I tend to agree with you. That’s why I’m a neutralist

Yeah being proper. Ok. IDK. I used to be runner and cyclist and was called skinny. In a sense not presenting an attractive masculine body wasnt proper based on social expectations.

I’m confused. Are you saying that you were insulted by being called skinny? If so, they shouldn’t have said anything

Cycling is amazing with high fitness. Pretty crap without it. I’m over 40 now and doubt I will ever cycle well again.

You’re still young enough to get the high fitness you need back. Set that goal, set the small goals to get to the big goal, and go for it.
