I’ve had difficulty swallowing food and it’s gotten fairly severe now. I was to the doctor and got prescribed Pantoprazole, which reduces stomach acid. He thought it was stomach acid irritating the esophagus (food tube leading to the stomach), making it hard to swallow. So I’m on my third day on this med. It has been hard to eat today, but I manage to eat some oatmeal with milk. (liquid is easier)
This problem brings me a great deal of anxiety but I trust the doctors. I just hope it’s what the doctor thought, so they don’t need to investigate further making it take longer to resolve.
Just thought letting this out. It’s what occupies my mind at the moment, and it sucks having trouble with doing a bodily function that keeps you alive.
I don’t want to go down weight, I want to solve this fast if possible. Going to the doctor again on Tuesday.
I have the same problem. I think it’s dry mouth for me. Food is too dry to go down. If I eat it with sauce or drink a beverage with it it’s easier to swallow.
I’ll have to purchase nutrient drinks that I hopefully am able to eat with the recommended amount. It’s gotten worse. This ■■■■■■■ sucks. Not getting enough calories.
I’ve been set up for appointment with a specialist. I don’t know how long it will take. If it gets even worse I’ll have to ask to go to the hospital.
Maybe something is blocking down there, maybe a tumour? I wouldn’t care to be honest, I don’t expect anything else than crap in my sheet life
I was on perphenazine and developed a bad swallowing disorder. I went through so much testing. They decided it was my AP. Once they took me off it after about two weeks I was fine. You need to talk to your pdoc about it being a possible reason.
thanks for the reply @sweetpotatopie and I’ll keep that in mind. I have been on olanzapine as my only AP for 6 years straight, and I never got these problems until relatively recent. I did mention to my doctor that I started having a lot of weird symptoms ever since starting Metoprolol (the beta-blocker that lowers your pulse). He said he doubted there was a connection to the swallowing issues. But who knows.
Olanzopine has been known to cause dysphagia especially with long term use. I’d definitely consider it if no other tests reveal obstructions or obvious reasons. Definitely consult with pdoc on this. Better to consider every possibility with doctors because they can help you see big picture. Sometimes specialists can be too myopic and not take all your meds or symptoms into consideration.
I think I’ll maybe just quit the Metoprolol tomorrow (send message to doc and taper down). I’m on a low dose only for the sole reason of a bit high heart rate, and that’s not gonna kill me. I can then rule it out.
Drinking nutrient drinks from the pharmacy. I’m afraid those will get too difficult also eventually. Will have an examination by specialist by the end of the month. I wish it was a bit sooner
