How can I manage to do it? I will have to someday
A bit of a schedule helps or having some structure. I don’t always live by this but a lot of days I have a list that a run through. Laundry, dishes, groceries, working out etc to help keep everything organized. What in particular are you worried about? One thing I also prioritise is paying my rent before I buy anything hands down. Often I pay it early just to make sure it’s done
I’m just worried if I’m sick I will starve or something or I won’t go to my doctors appointments
Luckily I don’t have doctors appointments so I don’t really have to deal with that. One thing that can help is learning to cook basic stuff. Don’t have to make like a royal feast like Gordon Ramsey, but just to have a few recipes in your back pocket. Especially budget meals.
Budget meals are foods that are made with cheap ingredients like rice beans, flour, potatoes etc.
Honestly one of the biggest things for me was learning to budget groceries. At first I just bought whatever I wanted and was hungry the rest of the month when I didn’t work. I vowed not to let that happened. Now I keep a stash of staples to make myself starve-proof for a few months.
Like when you move out the very first thing you should do if you have 100$ extra for example is to buy 2 giant bags of rices, beans, flour, sugar, a 4L bottle of oil, a ton of powdered milk. That way your covered no matter what. Even if COVID 2 hit you’d be ok as long as you have some source of carbs, fat, and protein. Then you can relax a bit so long as your rent is paid.
There’s just some basic things to living alone. You have to clean, there’s no way of getting around it. Even if you live in a pig sty, messy, filithy apartment you have to clean at least a little. I believe you’ll be happier if you live in a clean, neat environment. You can make it easier and just a clean a little at a time, set a few minor goals, maybe clean the bathtub/shower one day, clean a little bit of the kitchen a couple of days later.
You have to feed yourself, so you have to shop for food and cook it. Self explanatory. Nowadays, you can pay half price for delivery services like at Walmart and Safeway by uploading a proof of getting SNAP benefits or Medicaid. Cooking is easier than you think. You can download recipes for everything online from pancakes, hard boiled eggs and garlic toast to lasagna and beef stroganoff. I figure if you can read, then you can cook. A recipe tells you exactly how many ingredients in a dish, how much of each ingredient to use, to what order you put them in.
You don’t have to be best friends with your neighbors but it helps if you’re friendly.
Do your laundry, you can get up early and do a couple loads while you have energy.
@POET has a good idea with making lists, I do that too. it helps me keep organized and not forget anything that needs to be done. I write down places I need to go including doctors appointments, phone calls I need to make, things I need to buy and even what needs to be cleaned.
Living on your own is pretty basic, it’s not complicated.
That’s very true. Keeping things clean increases your morale so to speak. I think it’s an important part of life in general. It helps with mood and having a clear mind when everything is not scattered around.
It also helps keep things from getting out of control if you do like 10 minutes of cleaning every day so it doesn’t pile up on you. Easier to do 5 dishes every day then 50 at the end of the week or whatever
Id be worried living alone that my voices would be running experiments on me all day.
My dad’s retired so I have someone I trust to talk to and hang out with and my moms about to retire.
My voices can be worse when im alone.
What do you do when your too sick to get out of bed?
Mentally or physically?
Either one. What do I do then? I get sick a lot messing with my medicine
Being too sick to get out of bed is only temporary isn’t it? I mean if you’re physically sick then get treated by a doctor to solve it. If you’re fooling with your medication, well, stop, You shouldn’t be doing that anyways, take it as prescribed by a doctor. If you’re too mentally sick? Well, the day is long, you’ve got nothing but time and you can force yourself to get out of bed for at the least, a couple of hours.
Maybe focus on getting a good stack set before you move out. I haven’t adjusted my meds in years. I did injure my back for 8 months tho. At that time I did grocery deliveries to get me by.
My mom did exactly that. She lived with someone too. She got pneumonia and wouldn’t see a doctor. For some reason didn’t have the right food at home. She needed nutrition drinks. She had sz too.
Same here and I’m dreading it
I’ve lived on my own since 2021. At first it was hard getting used to after always having family or roommates. Now I love it. I try to keep a “must do” schedule which includes things like basic hygiene and cleaning. I clean my bathroom once a week, vacuum once a week, clean kitchen twice a week, dishes daily, brush teeth and wash face daily, shower every other day. I have these things actually written on a list on my wall to make it easy to remember. I have a cute self care app called Finch that also keeps me on track.
I attend therapy weekly, Pdoc appointments every 6-8 weeks. I stay in touch with my case manager at least on a weekly basis.
Budgeting is probably my hardest part, trying to afford everything on my own. But there are helpful budgeting apps and lists that can help.
Plan ahead for where your meals are coming from. I try to meal prep a few days at a time so that way I’m not tempted to order food delivery.
Living alone is doable, and can be really rewarding
Wow, you do a lot. That’s good!
Thanks, don’t get me wrong. When I’m depressed or anxious it gets hard to do the bare minimum. Sometimes I fall behind but then it’s harder to get back on track so I try to convince myself to just stay on top of the chores.
In may it will be 14 years living on my own.. when it comes to doing dishes basically everytime I dirty a dish I clean it. I wipe down the counters and table everyday. Once u get used to cleaning it feels good always having a clean home.. I clean my bathroom once a month. Sometimes friends comes over and I clean up right after they leave. Usually they just leave a cup in the sink.. I used to be such a slob but these last 4 or 5 years I been pretty descent keeping my place clean
I cook for the entire day all in one go, i also do the laundry then. That way i get that all out the way.
Living alone is better wen u have ur own studio flat. Than living with others or with a landlord. More space
My landlady checks on me n talks with me. Its stresful because its like im constantly being assessed as tenant suitability.
