Grocery hacks/food ideas

I’m trying to be more purposeful with the groceries I buy. Often if I buy a half gallon of milk it goes bad before I finish it. I discovered shelf stable milk at the dollar store. It’s slightly more expensive than regular milk but I can stock up several quarts for really cheap and they don’t go bad till 14 days after being open in the fridge which is much better than fresh milk.

Another thing I’ve done is buy bulk cheese powder and boxes of pasta for really cheep. Then I can make “mac and cheese” in any amount I want. I’ve also discovered canned chicken and canned tuna go really well in mac and cheese for added protein.

No none of these things are 100% healthy but it helps me eliminate food waste and gives me something to eat.

Milk and tuna are very healthy. Milk has protein and like you say, tuna is a good sources of protein and not too many calories if eaten within reason. Tuna is low carb. Canned chicken is a good source of protein but you should buy low sodium. You can make pasta healthier by buying whole wheat. Chunk light tuna has less mercury than albacore or yellowfin but you should probably eat it no more than three times per week.

For good value I would recommend rice and dried beans. You can buy big bags and they have a long shelf life. Brown rice is healthier than white but asian countries eat white rice regularly and have lower levels of obesity than the U.S. You can buy different varieties of rice and beans and beans are high in fiber and protein. Beans aren’t hard to cook; you can soak them overnight and then put them on to cook 45 minutes before dinner to add to your meal and rice and beans make a good combination for a meal.

Love rice and beans. I regularly cook British baked beans(which are literally navy beans cooked in tomato sauce). Also if you’re on a calorie count brown rice has the same calories as white rice. I prefer short grain brown rice though you can find it in bulk at like winco

Lentils are also super good for you and are very cheap

If you spend a little more on fresh ultra-filtered milk like Fairlife it has an expiration date that’s about 2 months long. I don’t know why it lasts longer than regular milk but it does…and it tastes better than dry or canned milk. It’s also lactose free.

It has a longer expiration date but it’s still meant to be consumed within a certain date after being opened. And I don’t care about the taste because I use milk for recipes or protein shakes.

But yes the lactose free milk is a good option if you have the funds for it and the need for that much milk at one time. I’m a singe person I don’t go through milk very fast

Almond milk lasts a long time.

Almond milk does have a few benefits: it’s low calorie and tastes good but it’s not really a substitute for milk, It has 1 gram of protein per glass compared to milk with 8 grams, a lot of it is sweetened and most have only 2% almonds in them and what you’re paying for mostly is flavored water with a couple of vitamins added.
