Is anyone here 50 and over? At what age were you diagnosed with schizophrenia? And how to manage your illness when older?
I’m 46 years old
I’ll be 62 next week
I am 53. I was diagnosed in my early 40’s.
Two weeks till 52.Less symptoms then 30’ or 40’…
I’m 52…diagnosed since i was 16.
I’m 55F and I was dx with a psychotic illness but I don’t know what, when I was fifteen. Schizoaffective for several years the n schizophrenia about six years ago
I believe it’s been schizophrenia all along.
How do you stay mentally stable when going through so much? I’m 48 years old turning 49 in August. I hope I age gracefully.
Overall it’s gotten better as I age except for my cognition.
That took a hit
I am 53 and was diagnosed at 15.
I’m 65, I was diagnosed at age 19. I manage by taking my medication religiously (am I allowed to say that?) and seeing a psychiatrist and talking to my case manager. My disease has gotten way better as I aged, I mean less intense symptoms, no racing thoughts. At the worst of my disease it was a crisis every week where I thought I was going to go stark raving mad at any second. Now I keep to myself in my studio and my days are mostly calm and peaceful. I go to work three days a week for a few hours each day and I go to doctors appointments and run errands and take care of my money and my hygiene well, and I keep my apartment clean and get along with all my neighbors except for one. I don’t desire any changes in my life, I’m not looking for a girlfriend or a friend, maybe in the future.
prodromal at 30…full blown psychosis at 35…stayed insane almost the next year all the way to end of august…I’m now 64 since april…happy…love and hope is what keeps me going…I’m married…
That’s wonderful you found love and are happy.
thank you…this is my second marriage..my second wife currently that is, taught me so much about myself and I feel like a better person now that I’ve learned how to treat someone in a relationship…
I’m 62, and was diagnosed with schizophrenia at age 20 in 1984.
Of course the body ages over time, so I now put more emphasis on having a routine, sleep, diet, and trying to keep stress as low as possible.
70 next January. First dxed with schizophrenia in 1975. 1975-1983 = sz 1983- 2005= mainly sz-a mixed type ,occasionally bipolar 2005- 2018 personality disorder 2018/2019 sz/sz-a + autism.
Episodic. Stressed induced Comparatively mild positive and negative symptoms. Social difficulties most marked and persistent symptoms. Adaptive functioning( daily practical skills) < IQ. For many years regarded as ‘character defect’. My daughter set the record straight prior to my moving to be near her in 2017. ASD + effects of bullying related trauma > sz-a/sz re disabling.
Yes I’m 56M.
I’m 55 but soon to be 56.
Have a great psydoc. Got me onto champix to get off the nicotine before vaping. Also got me on keto before the glp 1 drugs…
Been amazing. I say I tread water for 20 years but on the lowest clinical doses of my meds and doing stuff I never would or do…Got involved in the local left and go to meetings and do stuff with them. It’s been relavatory and I’m doing better than I did back in my 40’s.
I was diagnosed late at 29 after a life of difference…I’m starting to be way more normal than previous and it’s a good thing.
I am in my sexy 60s’. If no ones told you it’s hell getting old and anyone wanting to get this age has really got to be confused with how much tolerance one can stand. It is amazing that they say the illness gets better as you age I just say it levels out for a little while.
Will turn 46 in September. Got my diagnose in 2004.
