I managed to stop by transitioning to vaping (quite hard), then to gum and patches (also hard), then to nothing (very hard).
But if you can try to replace the bad habit with a good habit, that might help too.
I managed to start running regularly using the ‘CouchTo5k’ app, and basically went from being very obese and sedentary, to running 10k events.
And regular exercise has been scientifically proven to improve your motivation.
