Psych ward essentials

As it stands right now I’m likely going to be admitted to the psych hospital on Thursday.

What are your must haves whenever you go? I’m already going to bring a book, coloring pencils and coloring books and my stuffed animal I always sleep with(yes I know I’m an adult).

Of course bringing clothing that’s comfy with no strings.

Bottle for water refills, constantly using plastic cups seems wasteful lol

Wow you’re lucky. Here in the US 95% of the time we aren’t allowed our phones in psych hospitals.

Every time I’ve been in I have had it in my possession the whole time.

I feel like that would be so much less stressful than being thrown into the unit with no phone.

@Mr.Apple out of the 6 psych hospitals I’ve been in none allow personal water bottles. The hospital I prefer gives you reusable plastic water pitchers with straws

Very different from here, we’re allowed personal water bottles and even phones too.

I guess psych hospitals are vastly different across multiple countries. Here in the US we aren’t allowed or are very limited on what is and isn’t allowed.

Stuffed animal is a good idea. I did that too last time.

Its unusual that u cant take ur phone. Uk u can take phone. Plus theres connectivity. True dat it releases a lot of stress in some situations,

How about some gloves if ur hands get cold. I have long fingerless gloves. They come in handy

That’s a brilliant idea about the gloves. The psych hospitals are always so cold.

I really wish they would allow me to take my kindle. I have so many books on there. I don’t have many real books anymore

Your shampoo. Notebook to write in etc. Toothbrush deodorant.

Its changed a lot over the last decade or two in Australia here. When I first went to a psych ward as a teen no one was allowed phones or anything really. It was a highly acute ward though. But the one that I went to a couple times more recently, they allow phones and heaps. Thats also a sub-acute ward though. So its for those less intensely unwell.

The nurses and such would say that taking phones away from people especially young people was a whole other ballgame. They weren’t just dealing with psychosis or suicidality etc, but also dealing with phone-separation anxiety and the craziness that comes from all that these days.

Anyways i think a book or two is a good idea to bring with you in case. Sorry your going through it right now with work and stuff and everything else. Sincerely wishing you all the best. You might even get along with some of the folk in there. Sometimes theres a good bunch of crazies in the wards when I go. Take care. :slightly_smiling_face:

I would bring some snacks, maybe some granola or trail mix or nuts. Or crackers. Maybe a book of crossword puzzles or other similar word games if you’re into those.
