The biggest problem with charitable giving

No, Im not here to bash charities or giving to those in need.

The problem is that both organizations and individuals you give to often end up hounding you for more.

Especially during this time of year.

I have my own financial issues I have to deal with and it is not pleasant to have to feel guilty that you cant afford to give atm.

Just a thought I figured I would share.

I get letters asking me for donations all the time, I usually rip them up without opening them. I have two charities I give to regularly and can’t afford more. I get three or four letters from charities every other day.

Same. We’re finally getting back to normal after my wife was on strike without pay earlier this fall. It put a right dent in the budget.

The Snow Angels program is also getting on my tits this month. I’m the most active one in town, which wasn’t on purpose just sort of happened. I have been knocked flat with the flu since Dec 6th and am only finally getting out for short walks again. I have not been shoveling because I will pass out if I try.

Some wanker called in to the town and complained I was being lazy and stopped shoveling. Yeah, her walk is off my list now. I’m a volunteer and I don’t need your crap. ■■■■ waffle.

I had a lot of that when I lived in Essex. I’ve had none since moving to Wiltshire. I am pro giving to charities, but anti being pressurised to do so.

I used to give a lot of charities back in the day. But my life has changed so much. I don’t do that anymore. I loved giving to charities.

I’ve donated to charities but don’t like how I get constant mail etc asking for more. I have very limited resources and I give what I’m able. I don’t like being hounded for more. I’ll still give what I can though.

Letters are a nuisance but phone calls are the real issue for me. I even get a request occasionally on Facebook from someone I help out.

The letters with the “free gifts” kind of pressure you to make a donation because you have been given something.

Once in a while i give money to one of the homeless immigrants begging on the streets of Copenhagen.

I guess giving charities is more common in USA than in Denmark where we have a well polstered welfare state

I’ve found international charities hound you less. Organisations like the United Nations and their children’s programmes for example

They’re wonderful. Free fire starting materials for camping trips. Got a nice tub of them.

Tear, soak, compress, dry. Good fire logs as long as you don’t cook food directly over them, use only for warmth.

Charitable giving should be a billionaires job not mine.

I’m not a billionaire. I do remember sitting in school as a kid without lunch because it was the end of the month when the money had run out and being hungry while all the kids with working parents ate their lunches. I’m blessed to be doing well now, so I’m trying to be there for the kids today who are like I was. I support lunch programs.

Good on you. I still donate to charities because they won’t.

I give to a charity every month and they always ask for more money, it pisses me off

Getting rid of billionaires entirely would also be a viable solution.

I’m not in position to donate.

But i always keep money hidden in my pocket to give someone who is really in problem. When I see people picking from garbage,I politely ask them if they would accept some money, and often they don’t, probably bc their principles. Also some of that folks,I take to store to buy groceries.

Also,I visit local orphanage to bring kids drinks.

Since I can’t carry more than six litres,I asked coordinators if it is enough.. Last time I asked if I can teach them hairdresser job, cause they had donated all equipment.. They said they must check if they can allow such thing..

Waiting for answer, cause most of older kids already started smoking, begging and stealing.

it sort of bothers me and also not, I know they really struggle and with the government pulling aid, they need more than ussual, I like to see the newsletters that tell me how my money has helped people, I think food/water & medicine is my biggest gift,

In my local area I try and help keep the bin area and garden in a good state, it’s not nice when people dump stuff though and make a mess. My neighbour complains that I don’t wash the flat landing & stairs but I do the garden & bins so she can get stuffed lol (I get anxious mopping the stairs) like I would do it but my chest gets so tight.

I find that among big corporation charities. The charities I assist with, ones from the church, are ground-level working directly with people in need. People donate fiercely. And we managed to make up around 20 large boxes of goodies for local families. 3 of our surrounding Parishes had similar responses, and they’ll likewise deal with their local people in need. But this is a charity where it has a leadership at the very very top, and then its just people on the ground. No multi structures or media departments .etc :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
