I’m of an age when far fewer people went to college/uni,regardless of whether they had SMI or not. I think it was <10%. Threads like this foster highly mixed emotions. Admiration for those who have achieved + intense feelings of failure and hurt for not being mentally resilient enough to achieve, without the help and support I so desperately needed but never got.

Therapy is heightening those thoughts, primarily because it far too little far too late. Psychologically I’m not in a good head space.

Yea, it’s always tough to choose one path especially if you’re a person who has interests in a lot of different things. Trades are becoming more and more sought after, so there’s that as well.

Not too sure what I would end up going back to school for— probably something that makes sense with my undergrad degree (Sociology). Would like to ultimately help others in some way, so we’ll see how it goes!

You know, I used to score high on IQ tests but I don’t think I would now. I struggle with critical thinking and even memory. Plus, my high scores in college never turned into a good paying job. I’ve always made just over minimum wage

Me too.

Also my high scores didn’t turn into big bucks.

I attended nine different colleges, going on ten. We moved a lot, so I transferred a lot. It is a huge pain in the rear to have to pull transcripts now.

I went to two universities and 3 colleges. One of them a couple times. Psychosis messed me up most times.

My story was very similar.

First I went to a university in the north of England, then another in the city next to the first; then finally ended up completing an unfinished degree in the town closest to my hometown.

It was economics, but because it’s not a fully classified last term by typical standards - I left with what we call ā€œa compensatory pass gradeā€

It’s the reason why I’ve had to start another programme from scratch (currently finishing up the first year of a roughly 4/5)

The heartbreaking thing about my first degree, was that I completed all the work but the institution refused to mark it and kicked me out citing health too poor to participate despite me submitting the dissertation equivalent. The programme leader then also said to me that I’m ungrateful (I owe the government Ā£70,000 ish) now for a certificate which is ā€œcompensatoryā€

You shouldn’t feel bad. You never know who would withhold your efforts from you nowadays, as much as things have improved. For those who are struggling the most ; things are still ridiculously bad.

My social worker often says, a lot more needs to be done especially outside of public healthcare - eg; education systems or organisations

Sorry to hear that. Getting a degree is often the ticket to a better life. It’s really sinister to deny someone that when they came so far with an illness.
