Why do i have depression every evening?

At evenings before bed I get the blues.

I get despair. Why? Maybe because I have fewer distractions?

Maybe your meds wearing off?

I take antidepressant in the morning. Maybe that’s why.

But

I take mood stabilizer in the afternoons

1. The “Quiet Room” Effect & Rumination

During the day, your brain is occupied by external stimuli—work, errands, conversations, or screens. When the evening arrives and the world quiets down, those distractions vanish. In the absence of external input, the brain naturally turns inward. If you are already prone to depression or anxiety, this quiet space quickly gets filled with rumination (looping, repetitive negative thoughts about the past or future).

2. Circadian Rhythms and Hormones

Your body runs on a strict internal 24-hour clock that regulates everything from body temperature to hormones. As the sun goes down, your brain triggers a drop in cortisol (a hormone that helps manage stress and alertness) and a rise in melatonin (which prepares you for sleep). If your circadian rhythm is slightly misaligned or your neurotransmitters (like serotonin and dopamine) are running low, this dramatic hormonal shift can cause a sudden, sharp drop in mood

3. Exhaustion of Emotional Bandwidth

Mental health requires active energy. Throughout the day, you use a massive amount of cognitive energy to regulate your emotions, mask your struggles, and get things done. By 7:00 PM or 8:00 PM, you have simply run out of gas. This physical and mental fatigue strips away your psychological defense mechanisms, making you highly vulnerable to dark or heavy thoughts.

Well that sounds interesting.

I’m a little like that. I don’t like to finish the day by going to bed, but I know I have to.

Yes. Now what? I used to do things all day. Mainly my favourite music. And now I must switch my mind and sleep

My bet is lack of distraction.

My mood also drops in the evening. I also tend to worry more about things then. I also put it down to lack of distraction.

My doctor says this is the reason I get more voices at night

I rarely have voices before bed.

Usually in the mornings and noons

This is interesting. My symptoms are typically worse in the evening/night. Haven’t heard or read about this theory

I’m 100% a morning person, as well. I feel the best then

Can sympathize:

I usually wake up very early and by 11:30am to 12:00pm I am deeply depressed.

Have chatted to Google Gemini about it and AI thinks it has to do with a severe caffeine crash that happens around that time of day.

I do drink the equivalent of 8 cups of coffee before 10am, which is way too much caffeine to have in one whole day, let alone the span of 6 hours, so I think that theory could possibly make sense.

(I also have SZA Bipolar-type, so it’s highly possible I am also on the downswing right now.)

Could your issue be caffeine-related, @Om_Sadasiva?
