Can depression come and go?

It’s coming in waves. Just like that. Out of the blue. I feel sadness and despair and after half an hour I’m fine again.

Now it’s gone, for example.

I’m listening to music. I’m fine.

When I’ll lay on my bed I am going to feel despair again

No problem. But I don’t understand this phenomenon. I will ask my psychiatrist, probably on monday

I think the mind always seeks homeostasis, a balance between extremes often falling on moderation as a set mode.

I take a mood stabilizer, otherwise it rapid cycles.

I was taking mood stabilizer when I was first diagnosed. Maybe I need one again?

Yes, sounds reasonable

similar things happen with bipolar especially if the depression followed by mania… can be rapid cycling if its very fast.

Ultra rapid if very fast.

I have no mania though

i heard that people with Boarderline personality disorder often suffer feeling like almost both feelings at once similar to bipolar as well. so could be rapid cycling bipolar or maybe BPD if thats not out of the realm of posibility. i dont know much about this tho just what ive heard… best to talk with your doc

Shifting between moods that rapidly sounds more like emotional dysregulation than it does bipolar.

Even rapid cycle bipolar mood affects change over the span of 24 hours to a couple of days, and not so much multiple times over an hour.

At least that’s what my psychiatrist explained to me a while ago and I did more research on emotional dysregulation.

Obligatory disclaimer: I’m not a doctor, and if it’s super uncomfortable seek support. I do recommend looking up emotional regulation skills to everyone, though.

EDIT: Just saw you reached out to your treatment team.

9 years ago I was having extreme mood swings in my prodromal phase and got prescribed tegretol. Later I stabilized for years with constant depression and now that

Ultra rapid is swings by minute.
