How much does a group home cost?

And what is it like?

Just trying to think of future for when my parents are gone

Ive only been at one in Canada. I had to pay rent but they gave it all back when I left.

It can be pretty personally invasive.

You know what you can or cant do. I would rather live completely alone than live in a group home.

Maybe a roommate would be better but idk if they would be home enough and they might eat my food

Yep roommate is highly likely to be bad. But group home folks can be bad too.

I was getting SSDI and they took my entire check for rent. They supplied all the food and gave us access to a washer and dryer and they did all the cleaning. It was a male-only home and there were 15 guys and we had to share a room with one other person. We just had to make our beds very day and keep our little area of our bedroom neat and picked up. It had all ages from 16-65 years old. It had a TV and a VCR and a cabinet full of all the coolest movies by Arnold Schwarzenegger, Claude Van Damme, Sylvester Stallone, Tom Cruise and other similar stars. That was all the entertainment it had, there was a patio where the main group hung out and smoked.

Several of the residents were doing drugs and drinking and there was some theft going on, it was pretty safe though, I wasn’t scared to be there. There were a few people I didn’t like, most were OK though. I worked the entire time I was there, a couple other people worked but I was the only one going to school. The owners kept it clean and neat, it was actually the number one rated board & care home in San Jose, California a city of a million people. So they can get a lot worse.

I’ve been in 6 different group homes, there were some shady characters sometimes but I felt relatively safe. There was drug use and drinking in almost all of them though it was against the rules. In some we had regular chores, a couple, like the one I mentioned, you just had to keep your bedroom clean and neat. In all of them they supplied the food but in a couple of them we had to take turns cooking.

One of them was heavily structured, in the others you pretty much had the whole day to do what you want but they had curfews, usually 9:00 at night. If you plan on moving into a group home you want to check out as many different ones as you can, you want one that is in a good location near bus lines and stores and preferably in a nice neighborhood. You can visit some to get an idea what they’re like and what the residents are like.

I lived in a group home for over a year and I hated it one of the people who lived there liked to steal off all of us .. plus I was the youngest one there by 30+ years. at first living alone was lonely but after a while you just love it and wouldnt have it any other way

Yep i agree im used to living alone now.

You just got to get down all the things you do in a day so youre not suffering

Believe me, you don’t want to live in a group home @Rainstorm

If I can live by myself then you can too

I like living on my own, by myself but living in a group home wasn’t terrible. You get used to it. I lived in one from 1990-95 and totally adjusted to it. Group homes have some pluses, you don’t have to shop for food or cook and you have little responsibility and much freedom. When I was living in that group home I was totally used to it and it was fine, it had some drawbacks but it wasn’t like I was hating it and it wasn’t like I could hardly wait to get out. It was my home. You get into your routines and you get used to the people there and it isn’t a half bad living situation.

I would rather live on my own but if I had to go back to one it wouldn’t devastate me. Living in a small apartment with a roommate who treated me condescendingly was better than a group home but not by much. Having a roommate is fine if you get along with them but if you don’t it sucks. At least when I was in the group home no one had it in for me like my current neighbor.
