Lamictal/lamotrigine. Anyone tried these?

My prescriber wants to put me on this mood stabilizer called Lamictal/Lamotrigine.

There’s some pretty crazy rare side effects..

Just curious if anyone else here has tried it and what they thought of it?

Thanks

I’ve been on it for a while and I love it. I didn’t get any side effects, but it’s one to be careful not to miss a dose.

@WONDERER

I take Lamotrigine, 200 mgs twice a day. It helps stabilize my mood.

Your prescriber should start you on 25 mgs once a day for the first two weeks, so if you do get a rash it won’t be severe.

As for the rash, about 10% of people do get a benign rash that usually goes away over time. The life-threatening rash (Stevens-Johnson Syndrome) is rare, occurring in only about 0.08% to 0.3% of adults (roughly 1 in 300 to 1 in a thousand). If you titrate up too fast and/or take Wellbutrin the chances of the life-threatening rash increase.

I’ve been on low doses before many times.

Great antidepressant mood stabilizer.

At higher doses it controls mania too.

Be careful on it if you nurse. Also starting it while pregnant is somewhat risky. I had high risk pregnancies while on it. It works great for me. So don’t be afraid to try it. The doctors need to watch you carefully if you do.

That’s good to know.

My prescriber kind of worded it weird, she made it sound like 10% of people get the Stevens Johnson syndrome rash. Unless I misunderstood her, but it had me pretty worried :grimacing:

From what I’ve googled too, it says it’s rare.

Thanks for the response

Yeah, I don’t plan on nursing.

I don’t know, I’ve been pretty unstable emotionally lately…

Very irritable, I cry easily, overwhelmed, and everyone in the house is driving me nuts..

Since they changed my diagnosis to bipolar 1, the prescriber is concerned I’m having a depressive episode.

But maybe I should wait and give an OB a heads up before I start taking it.

If you can start taking now it would be good cause you are at risk for ppd. But just make sure you get close monitoring while taking when preg.
