Schizophrenia without positive symptoms, psychosis etc

The staff at the medical center I visit once weekly were in doubt whether I was schizophrenic at all. But after a thorough examination by a specialist my SZ diagnosis was confirmed, primarily because of my negative, cognitive symptoms and ipseity disturbance. The specialist used this strategy to evaluate me

Sounds familiar, like everyday experience. In the past have heard terms schizophrenia simplex and deficit schizophrenia thrown around, maybe there is a truth to those. But it is a complex syndrome anyhow for everybody experiencing symptoms over time, better believe it.

Yes, and it is escpecially complex for other people to understand why you have schizophrenia, when you don’t have any psychotic symptoms and you immediately look and act like everybody else.

It can be frustrating to be accused of laziness and malingering even if the problem is a real brain based condition. How come everyone with such symptoms should be stark raving mad before anyone takes it seriously, it is hard to grasp as a concept. Negatives can be just as difficult to bear day in, day out just as active psychosis or positive symptoms in general. But it seems only really outgoing difficult patients are dealt with, the rest can go suck an egg. :egg:

I can relate. My voices have become benign and my delusions / paranoia have been gone for years thanks to treatment, but I still have great difficulty focusing and sitting still. At first glance I’m normal but the negatives still handicap me.

I agree @kali @Agent101g , negative symptoms are so poorly understood by the public. According to a lot of psychiatrists it is the primary reason people with SZ are suffering and it is almost impossible to treat with medicine. Every time a stranger asks med what my diagnosis is i’m telling them i have schizophrenia without psychotic symptoms but they don’t seem to understand it.

Hi @moon - my ipseity disturbance makes it difficult to relate to my own voice and body (dissociation) like im a stranger to myself. I also find topics like “identitity” or related phenomena difficult to understand like what the hell is “pride”? and if a psychologist asks me whats the story of myself is, my self narrative, how do i perceive myself? i’m just blank, i have no self-understandig as such.
