ive been on risperidone for two years, it pulled me out of psychosis, but recently it stopped working for me so my psychiatrist upped my dose, since then i got frustrated bc it made me gain since ive been on it for two years , it made me gain 20 kg, and it increased my appetite, i told my psychiatrist and she told me that its not the medication that made me gain weight , its because i dont exercice , after crying to her about my weight gain , she decided to put me on amisulpride, which has started to cause me akathisia, im so frustrated, can anyone give me some advice? do i switch psychiatrists?
No amount of exercises fixes the metabolic changes these antipsychotics cause. Zyprexa made me go from 170 to 210, i eat two meals a day no snacks and i walk every other day.
I’m surprised your psychiatrist said that. All things considered though i think being pudgy is better than being delusional, but it sucks having to choose.
i probably wouldn’t switch psychiatrists unless she’s doing a poor job in other areas too though. There is a lot to be said about stability.
Instead of upping my dose in that situation we just tried other antipsychotics until we found one that works at a low dose. For me it’s Zyprexa.
yea , psychiatrists in my country are evil, when i was in the USA they were much more understanding
amisulpride has helped in terms of paranoia and delusions, i have been able to function and go outside even though ive only been on it for two weeks, but now since i upped my dose from 200 to 300, ive been experiencing lethargy and akathisia
My zyprexa caused akathisia at higher dose (20 mg). We slowly decreased dose as low as we could and today i am on 5 mg and the akathisia is mostly gone.
Akathisia is super scary so i understand your concern.
which country are u from?
Im in the USA.
lucky you, living in morocco with psychosis is absolute hell
On zyprexa I gained 60 pounds and I was only eating one meal a day. I was on it for a year. It made me hallucinate a lot and I slept like 14 hours a day. To my doctor I’m just a 15 minute decision. I have to plead my case every time I’m with him. His goal is to get me in remission. He could care less if I gain a million pounds or have the shakes or high blood pressure. He’ll just throw more pills at me. To him he’s only a good psychiatrist and deserving of pay if he gets me in remission. It’s best if you don’t nit pick symptoms. I stopped telling my pdoc every detail of my problems, he just throws pills at me till I self destruct with side effects. My pdoc said he can’t force me to take any meds and that I have a say so. But he’ll try to push me to take the meds he wants by going into long detailed arguments to make his case. I just stand strong and say no. I know my body, I want meds with minimal side effects and I’m staying on them. Hope things gets better for you.
thank you, have you managed to lose the weight?
No, just 15 pounds. I’m starting to eat more vegetables than other meal items. It’s hard. I work out sparingly. I still look skinny. I used to where medium clothes now I wear Xtra large.
the weight gain part really sucks, im still trying to accept my diagnosis and the fact i have to take these meds, when i was 16, my symptoms started to get worse but hey at least i was happy with my appearance
Welcome to community … I’m on clozapine and for 26 years .. It has side effects but it’s called “golden standard”
I believe that Morocco has it.
I’m from Eastern Europe
thank you, does it also cause weight gain?
Yes,pretty much ,but it brings you peace of mind ..
i really cant handle more weight gain T-T
I went from 145 to 210 in 7-8 months when they started me on clozapine and also stopped the Mounjaro for ECT. Now I’m back on Mounjaro and have started losing weight again but it’s hard. I’m getting ready to do ECT again in a few weeks but I’m not going to stop the Mounjaro this time. I still have a lot of weight to lose…
@poisonofivy,I can only recommend you weight neutral old med trilafon.
my doctor said amisulpride is supposed to be weight neutral, my friend said the same so im trying it out
It raises prolactin, you have to check it occasionally ..
