When I was in the hospital for 8 months when I was 21 we ate all our meals in a big cafeteria that could seat 40 people. I ate alone every meal for 8 months, no one invited me to sit with them and no one joined me at my table. It didn’t bother me at the time, I didn’t expect anyone to like me but I can see now how sad that was.
Dude, don’t let eating by yourself bother you given the environment you were in. At the workplace, I didn’t eat with my colleagues but rather munched on my lunch and surfed the Internet.
That hurts deeply. It’s rejection, even if you’re not trying to be liked. I’m sorry that happened
I don’t get alone time anymore much. The only time I really get alone time is when dog and wife are both asleep again after dog wakes me up at 2 am then I get her back to sleep.
Otherwise either the wife or dog or both are always with me.
Oh there is when I go to the grocery store I suppose. Someone needs to watch teh puppy so I do usually do that myself atm.
Well your a likeable person here @77nick77
I think I’d be voted the most unpopular boy to have ever gone to my British public school.
Last time I was in hospital I thought the other patients were plotting to kill me
I sat alone at the hospital too. I think it’s pretty normal to keep distance at a psych hospital. I can’t remember any of the patients on my ward interacting actually. The only exception might have been inside the smokers lounge. I only spoke slightly with staff that took me out for walks.
I only had month long stays though.
I like you Nick
I know how you feel man … I feel hated by virtual all my neighbors and even my city.
Its not easy being disliked bro
I was the odd one out at school. In gymnastics I was the one person who didn’t have a partner when we were told to team up. I didn’t let it bother me too much though.
I was in a about a dozen psych hospitals, and what always made me sad was that at visiting hours some patients had visitors and some didn’t. Some never had visitors.
My mother visited me often, but some days she couldn’t. I would just stay in my room when she didn’t visit me.
I used to care what others thought of me and being liked was somewhat important to me but now I don’t care what others think of me so freeing and liberating and you’re more peaceful I found when you don’t let what others think of you dictate your life. I am so unbothered by anyone or anything and it’s great used to make me sad and used to cry over things people said about me either in my presence or absence now I smile and go about my day I have no friends and I am cool with that never really had that many friends anyway. I have this sister-in-law who doesn’t like me or my family it seems she is friendly sometimes when we are to see her, but I see right through her persona. I don’t like her either and I think she knows it too. I texted my niece about it and I think she may have told her I don’t like her just my gut telling me she told her she acts different around us now, so I know she had to have told her.
I have a good social network, best thing I ever did was move into my group home.
I know the feeling; that was me in high school, and most of my college years, a loner even though I didn’t really want to be a loner. I was rejected by everyone, would often go 24+ hours without saying a word, even on a school day. I had untreated psychosis.
Makes me sad, too, when I think of how my adolescence was ruined by unmedicated psychosis. Sad. Just saying I know the feeling, how it’s painful to recall. I think you’re a good guy, Nick.
I hate hospital settings. But the hospitals I’ve been in had lousy food and it was hard to socialize with the patients.
In your group home do you have a lot of friends? And do you have your own room and what activities do they have?
I have a lof of friends and friends in the community. I have my own room, it’s a very large house with 3other people sharing it. Mainly with intellectual disabilities and autism. I get to keep all my benefits which total £1800 a month and out of that I only have to pay £180 towards the bills
That’s great! It sounds like a nice place. I live in the US, it looks like you live in the UK. I would like to have a place of my own some day.
I was lonely living on my own, I think with group homes you have to have the right mix of people to live with otherwise it could be really problematic. Thankfully I live with some really nice people and we have a great staff team. I get 21 hours support one-to-one a week and access to 55 shared between three other people from what I’ve read social support from the social services is much better in the UK than the states
