It infuriates me how much groceries cost. I spend more on groceries than I do my rent. It’s really really annoying. And I keep having to budget more and more for groceries.
We spend more than I’m paid each month on groceries. That does include cleaning supplies and toiletries, but it’s still outrageous. Life simply costs too much now. And I really don’t want to go back to work. It’s super stressful. My mental health always suffers while working and I have physical health problems too. But we’re running out of our savings and if I don’t get a job soon we won’t be able to eat. I only been eating 1200-1300 calories a day since a month ago and I plan to keep that going so it’s not overeating that’s the issue.
We buy chicken, eggs, beef, turkey, rice, veggies and fruits, plus protein powder. I make very healthy meals. That’s partly why our food is so expensive. But we’re both trying to live as healthy a lifestyle as possible
Since groceries do make up a significant percentage of monthly income, I think it’s worth looking into strategies to save money. There are too many to list, but I suggest starting with an AI search and watching YouTube videos.
There are several reasons why groceries cost a lot more than they did pre-pandemic. Also, when prices go up they never go back down from where they were. We just have a “new floor,” which consumers get used to paying.
The price of gas. California has the highest gas prices in the nation. A year and a half ago it cost me $37 to fill up my gas tank, two days ago it cost about $73. It helps that I moved closer to work so I’m using less gas per week. Gas a month ago was $5.59 a gallon if you could find a cheap station. If you’re running out of gas and you didn’t plan ahead and go to a more expensive station it’s easily $6-something a gallon. This week it went down a little, I drove past a station and saw it for $5.15 a gallon, but most places are still $5.39.
My wife bought a townhouse in Maryland years before we got together. I had a six figure attorney salary and we rented her townhouse to my ex husband a number of years ago. We eventually moved in and he moved out. Then I went on disability and SSDI isn’t even 25% of my salary. I had to cash out my 401k. And then we got hit with a big tax bill bc of doing that. The IRS just got paid off last month.
Then we got the idea to sell the townhouse and move Somewhere where we could afford to buy a house with cash from that sale. So we moved from the DC area to a rural town in south Carolina. It was a good decision. We have 100% equity in the house and we own our car outright as well. But our budget is still pretty tight. But my wife doesn’t work and is waiting to see if she will get disability. So it’s stressful there’s no money for just having fun.
