Before the fight, someone asked Fabio Wardly what Dobois would be doing for a living if it werent for boxing. He responded something ot the effect of “bin man” which translates to “Garbage man” in the US.
He later tried to make the argument that there was nothing wrong with that profession when he recieved a bit of a backlash. And there is nothing wrong with it. But he clearly meant it as an insult , as if Dubois was not capable of anything else and it was a lowly profession.
This rubbed me wrong on two levels. 1. Because he obviously has disdain for people doing manual labor jobs like garbage man. 2. It was an arrogant thing to say about Dubois
So, this gave me someone to root for. And Dubois delivered.
He was the underdog going into the fight. He got knocked down once in the first round and once in the 3rd, but went on to dominate the remainder of the fight and finally got a TKO stoppage in the 11th.
It really was a great fight because the power of both fighters made it possible for knockdowns/knockout at any point in the fight and made it very exciting.
My own personal opinion is that both fighters have a lot of power. Dubois appears to have a slight edge in this department but has a questionable chin and better boxing abilities. Wardly has good punching power, and a chin like iron. He never went down despite some heavy shots. This did not, however prevent his eye from swelling up and severe cuts. Even without the stoppage he wouldve lost on the cards in the end despite the knockdowns to Dubois.
THere was a rematch clause in the contract so they may go at it again in the next fight. If not, I would like to see Dubois vs Moses Itauma.
Anyway Dubois now is the WBO heavyweight champion and it was a hell of a fight.
Btw, Both men had a 95% knockout percentage on wins going into the fight. It was expected to be KO fight. It’s practically a miracle that it lasted 11 rounds and is only because of Wardleys iron chin.
Boxing in it’s purest form is amazing. Two people hitting the shite out of each other till they collapse but there’s strategy. There’s thinking. It’s brutal af but I agree. I don’t watch much boxing these days but much respect for the players. That is hard work to get to the top of it!
Oftentimes heavyweight boxing is the most exciting because of the potential of the fight changing at any moment due to punching power. So probably heavyweight.
Although, sometimes, since they have unlimited weight, the fighters can be out of shape and slow.
All weight divisions have thier good and bad, though. So I’m willing to watch a good fight in any weight class.
